December trip is still in the planning stages.

Crystal River
We will be making our annual pilgrimage to visit the manatee in Florida. This trip will be sometime in January.

Cavern and cave training trips
We will be making plans during February and March trip for cave and cavern courses. Details will be available as soon as we get the dates and instructors set.

Bonaire
We are planning a return to Bonaire for July 2009.
This trip will be open to all divers and families and in addition, we will be running a kids camp this year at the same time. This is a fantastic trip for families with kids age 8 – 15.
Non-diving kids from age 8 – 12 will enjoy a day camp with informative classes on the island ecology, reef systems, reef fishes and other creatures and they will be conducting snorkeling tours around the Island.
Diving kids from age 10 – 15 can enjoy the same programs with Instructor and staff led dives throughout the week. Certification dives for ages 10 and up can also be completed during the week of camp. Class and pool sessions can be completed before the trip.
Dates and details will be out in the next week or two, so stay tuned for more.

Lake is still warm and plenty of time left to dive this year. The boat will be going to the wall every other week through Oct. We’ll see what the weather holds for Nov & Dec. When water temps drop below 60 we will be headed to the Hot Hole every weekend.

Sorry we had to cancel last weekend’s night dives and Sunday afternoon boat trip. The water pump went out on the boat on Saturday coming back from the afternoon dives. We should have the boat repaired and operational by the weekend. We apologize for any inconvenience this caused any of our divers.

The boat will be scheduled to run Saturday on August 30.
Morning trip will pick up at 9am at the divers ramp.
Afternoon trip departs at 2pm also from the divers ramp.
The night dive picks up at the main dock at 7pm.
There will be 2 dives (or more) on each trip to the wall. Call the store to reserve your spot.

Don’t know if any of you have heard but there is a very unique dive site now at Lake Keowee near the 130/183 bridge past Oconee Nuclear Station. We will be diving this site on Saturday morning at 8am. Our rescue course will take place all day at the same area, so if anyone wants to come out we’ll direct you to the site.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NEW GEAR
Everyone should drop by and check out the new Micron from Aqua Lung .  The Micron is the smallest, lightest weight regulator on the market today and still delivers like a high performance reg should but is still only moderately priced. Now that many airlines are lowering their weight limits or instituting bag charges, packing light weight gear becomes more important than ever for dive travelers.
The Micron comes in 2 colors; Pink/Vanilla and basic black/silver.
Somehow we ordered way too many regulators from AquaLung and ended up with a huge overstock of ABS Octos. This 2nd stage normally retails for $132.00, but until we deplete this stock we have them on sale for 25% off ($99).
Purchase a Micron Regulator and get the ABS Octo for $75 and a free reg bag.
We have 2 great cameras in stock.  The Sea Life DC800 and the 1G from Sea and Sea.
Check out all the features at their respective websites and come by for a demo.
http://www.sealife-cameras.com/
Dive tip of the week
“Back on the boat with 500 psi”.  Every diver has heard that statement from Dive boat operators to dive shop owners and Instructors.  But do you know why?  Obviously it’s for safety reasons as we don’t want anyone to run out of air, but I know some divers that may be able to make 500 psi last for 20 minutes or more.
The real reason behind the 500 psi rule is the in-accuracy of gauges. A few years back most gauges were analog and because of the way they are designed they are most accurate in the middle of their working range. Imagine the face of the gauge as a clock and it runs from 7am – 5pm. Most gauges are accurate between 10am and 2pm or about 1000 psi to 2000 psi. They can be as much as 200 – 400 psi off at the extreme ends of their range.  So the next time you see an analog gauge at 500 psi, think about this, does it actually have 500 psi, 900 psi or maybe just 100 psi?
The new boat is working out great for us, only problem is our classes have been so full we haven’t had room to take any of our certified divers out to the lake for fun dives.
We have decided to start running the boat to the wall on select Saturdays maybe running twice a month. We will start next Saturday, August 16 and run a morning and afternoon trip.  The boat will pick up at the Diver’s Ramp @ 9:30am and come back by 1pm, the 2nd trip will pick up at 2pm and come back by 5:30pm.
Since we have a limited number of seats, rental gear and tanks, it is important to call and get your spot reserved.
We’ll post the dive dates on the newsletter and on the calendar.
If you have brought gear to the shop for service we sincerely apologize for the delays.  We have just been overwhelmed with service work the last 4 months. We are working on finding solutions so we can get back to a one or two week turnaround time. This weekend and next week we will have several people devoting time to just service work.  Please be patient and we'll get through this growth spurt and have things back to normal soon.
TRIPS
Morehead City trip report:   This report was contributed by Doug Kim.
(July 25 through July 27, 2008).This was a great weekend with 18 divers enjoying wonderful weather, good surface conditions and clear water.  The trip there and back was uneventful except one detour in eastern North Carolina due to a chicken truck overturning on the road.  (In a rather smelly fashion, the truck did not contain chickens but rather the chicken guts and skin).  It must have been the biggest event in that area in a LONG time as they had the Emergency Management crews out and were closing all roads in & out of the area.
On Friday, we visited the U-352, the WWII German U-boat sunk by the Coast Guard in 1942.  The wreck sits in about 105 feet of water and we were able to see the conning tower, look down into the hatches and view the exposed torpedo tubes.  The second dive was the Spar, a 183 foot Coast Guard buoy tender that sank in 1986 and is sitting in 90 to 105 feet water.  Generally intact and sitting upright, we were able to see into the hatches and the cutouts that allow a view of the interior of the wreck.  There were many sand tiger sharks with our divers bring up lots of teeth.  Visibility was at least 75 feet and there was only a light current.  Unfortunately, it was also the site of two grouper that “someone”  let get away.
Saturday morning was clear skies and small waves.  We first visited the Caribsea sitting in 90 to 110 feet.  This wreck is a WWII freighter that was torpedoed in 1942 and has many sand tiger sharks and large grouper.  The water was clear with over 50 feet vis and a pleasant dive for all.  On the safety stop, there were several very curious barracuda that were swimming within inches of us hanging on the line.  The surface interval was sunny with sandwiches for lunch.  (Oreos were the favorite).  The next dive was the Atlas and this wreck is large with the top at 90 feet and the bottom at 130.  It was sunk by U-552 in 1942 and a great dive with two very large boilers and machinery behind the boilers.  The spear hunter was able to get a grouper, two porgy, a sheeps head and two flounder.  After we returned to the dock, we enjoyed good company and the traditional World Famous “Reese Feast” including the grouper, flounder, and sheep’s head complemented by sausages, filet and grill
ed corn on the cob.  We went to bed very satisfied after that meal.
Sunday morning, the seas were a little rougher, but all in all, a good trip to the first wreck, the Shurz in 110 feet of water.  This was originally the SMS Geier, a German gunship with 5 inch cannons visible lying on the bottom.  It was captured by the United States and renamed the Shurz.  There are still to be found bullets and brass bolts from the wreck.  While the vis was not quite as good as the days before, (about 25 ft), we were not disappointed with sand tiger sharks and southern sting rays.  During the surface interval, we feasted on the previous night’s steaks, fish and chicken.  The last dive was on the Aeolus, a 409 huge tanker split into three sections with each section being it own dive.  It’s so large that divers have been known to travel to other section and end up on the wrong boat (don’t know who would have done this).  The wreck includes open cable spool holes and the promenade deck makes for a nice swim though.  Large open spool holes, hatches and stairwel
ls also allow for penetration (for those with wreck certification).  The current was a little stronger but the visibility was such that we could still see the wreck from the safety stop.
The overall conditions were some of the best we have experienced and everyone enjoyed the weekend.  If you have any questions about joining us on the next trip, please feel free to call or email the store.
(Only thing Doug failed to mention was the frequent trips to Dairy Queen at the end of each boat trip and on the way home.)    ;-)
WEEKLY DIVE TIP
Talking with various divers that were certified in previous years, maybe in the 70s or 80s, we have discovered that most of those divers aren’t aware of the current recommendations on properly hydrating before diving. This is especially important if you are doing multiple dives a day or several days or a week or more of diving. DAN research has shown that drinking enough liquids may be the single most important thing a diver can do to help prevent a case of DCS (Decompression Sickness). Water is the most common and best hydrator, with sports drinks and juices coming a close second.  Be aware that caffeinated drinks are actually diuretics and can work against you when trying to hydrate. Alcohol is also not recommended on a dive trip.  Many people may drink in the evenings and if you do, be sure to not over do it if diving the next day. You can help flush your body with large amounts of water during the night and following day.  Most dive operations rule that your first drink o
f the day signifies the end of that days’ diving.
One thing to remember!  Drinking plenty of liquids is not a substitute for safe dive planning and staying within your level of training!!!
BONAIRE trip report
This was a fantastic trip.  The diving was great as usual in “Diver’s Paradise”.
A group of 4 tech divers dove the famous Windjammer wreck, another group of adventurous divers enjoyed a 20 minute trek over the waves to enjoy a dive on the wild east side, accompanied by Eagle rays on most of the dive, and  61 Bermuda Triangle divers invaded almost every dive site on the Island.  All in all, a great week of fun, food, sun, great diving and many new friendships.
Bermuda Triangle definitely left our mark on Buddy Dive and Bonaire
For next July we are already planning a return trip to Bonaire for a Kid’s Sea Camp.  This is something we have long wanted to do and I have 2 grandkids that are dying to go.
Start making plans now!!!
CURACAO   Oct 11 – 18, 2008
We are closing in on 90 days away from trip date.  We have plenty of spots available and will be taking reservations as long as resort space and airfare is available.
Curacao diving is very similar to Bonaire.  Easy beach and shore diving is available on Curacao and there are numerous topside activities to keep non-divers and those that aren’t severe dive addicts happy.  The Lion’s Dive Resort is located just in front of the Curacao Sea Aquarium and offers free access to Sea Aquarium Park & the Dolphin Academy.  Body Beach Wellness Club is also free to Lions Guests.
The resort offers free shuttle service to Willemstad.  Lions Dive also has 2 restaurants on site and is next door to Breezes Club Resort and Mambo Beach Club.
Call the shop for trip details and room pricing.  Check out the Resort Website for info.
I pulled the following quote off the Undercurrents monthly news.  It’s good advice to check flight status and always be prepared to pay a little extra to get to your destination.  Rising prices doesn’t mean you have to cancel travel plans, you just have to prepare a little better and earlier.  Plenty of bargain travel out there and we are always trying to give our dive travelers the most DIVES for their buck!
Caribbean Flight Alert from Undercurrents : If you're holding tickets to anywhere in the Caribbean, reconfirm those flights right up to your departure day. The rising cost of jet fuel will seriously affect the Caribbean because floundering American Airlines controls much of the market; for example, it will cut daily flights out of San Juan from 93 to 51. Spirit Airlines will close its San Juan hub, and Continental Airlines will soon announce destination and flight cuts. Smaller islands are asking LIAT and Air Jamaica to increase flights and coordinate schedules to fill the gaps. On the bright side, JetBlue plans to add daily flights to Puerto Rico this fall, and Virgin Atlantic may also add extra U.S. flights to the Caribbean.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Our Open Water classes are packed full for the summer. If you have paid for a course or you have family & friends wanting to get certified, be sure and call us soon to get on the schedule. Classes in July are already booked and August is starting to fill up already.

AND, 61 divers headed to BONAIRE to spend a week in “Diver’s Paradise”

CURACAO   Oct 11 – 18
We have plenty of room available for this trip. Curacao has been a hidden Caribbean secret for years, the diving is as good as Bonaire and there are tons of topside activities for divers and non-divers.
Lions Dive Resort has a great beach and the resort is located next to the Sea Aquarium Park and Dolphin Academy (Free entrance to both).
Breezes Super Club & Spa and Mambo Beach Club resorts are right next door which has casinos and even more beaches to explore. 2 Restaurants on site and the town of Wilhemsted is only a 10 minute shuttle ride for great shopping and eateries.
http://www.lionsdive.com/amenities.html

TURKS & CAICOS    Jan 17 – 24, 2009
Dive with us thru Turks & Caicos as we explore Providenciales, West Caicos and French Cay with the Caribbean Explorer II Live-aboard dive vessel. Up to 5 dives daily, all meals snacks, drinks tanks and weights included. This is the easiest diving you can do, everything is less than 50 feet from your room. Check out the boat and amenities at
www.explorerventures.com click on the Turks and Caicos link.
This trip is starting to fill up already. Only a few spots left.

New trips not on the schedule yet.
Myrtle Beach Wreck dives in August or September
Florida Keys reefs and wrecks in late November or early December
Details will be out in July.

NEW GEAR
We have recently brought in the line of Bonica Digital Cameras to add to our Sea & Sea and Sea Life Brands. We are stocking the Snapper Sport Package which comes with a 5MP camera, underwater housing, digital strobe and strobe arm all for under $600.

Aqua Lung has introduced a new regulator that we are now stocking, the Micron. It is extremely small and lightweight and comes in the standard regulator color AND a vanilla/pink color for the ladies. This is a GREAT travel regulator since all the airlines are cutting down on bag sizes and weight limits.
